Dear Akismet, I have a small suggestion which will improve your usually amazing comment spam-killing abilities by several orders of magnitude. In the spirit of open source, I won’t be charging you for my advice. If a comment has the phrase “ugg boots” anywhere at all – including in the person’s name, email address or website fields, it’s spam. No-one needs to make a manual decision about deleting it. Yours, etc. p.s. What are “ugg boots”, anyway? A few days ago, I blogged about the pitiful state of the plants outside Derby Station and also complained to East Midlands Trains. This email has arrived today: Dear Tim Thank you for your email. As a follow up to my previous email, I can confirm that works are scheduled to commence on the areas of borders/gardens surrounding the main entrance to Derby station over the next few days. Further to my recent post on the subject, another piece of entertaining comment spam has just landed in my blog's filter: Mythical! This blog looks just like my prehistoric identical! It’s on a completely different subject-matter but it has pretty much the same layout and design. Sterling selection of colors! You've got to award this one 9/10 for effort … I’ve just picked the following comment out of my blog’s spam filter and was particularly amused by it. Hello! Do you use Twitter? I’d like to supersede you if that would be ok. I’m fully enjoying your blog and look forward to late posts. Supersede away, my friend!
I promise that this is the final one of the series of posts (for now … as there’s always another quarter end …) which relate to my blog stats. Q1 2011 – referring sites
In some ways it’s no great surprise that facebook tops the list this time. I’m now finally on there myself and it also seems to have replaced a lot of the chatter that used to happen in the FirstClass forums in previous years.
