Privacy Policy for – last updated on 25th May 2018

I recognise that privacy of your personal information is important. Here is information on the types of personal information I receive and collect when you use and visit this site and how I safeguard that information. I do not sell your personal information to third parties.

Your rights to your data

If you have left comments on this site, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data I hold about you, including any data you have provided to me. You can also request that I erase any personal data I hold about you. This does not include any data I am obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes. Details on how to contact me are available here.

Comment Policy

Comments are welcome on this blog. Please keep them on-topic and respectful to others. I reserve the right not to publish comments for any reason, but in the decade this blog has been running, I’ve published more than 99% of them (spam excepted, obviously). You can also tweet to me or comment on my Facebook page if you’d prefer to.

When visitors leave comments on the site I collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

Visitor comments are checked through the Akismet automated spam detection service.

An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so I can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

Cookies and Analytics

If you leave a comment on my site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

This site uses statcounter to provide me with statistical information about your visit. Cookies are used by this service to enable this to take place.

You can choose to disable or selectively turn off cookies from this site or third-party cookies in your browser settings, or by managing your preferences in internet security programs.  This is unlikely to affect how you are able to interact with this site.

Embedded content from other sites

Articles on this site may include embedded content, for example, videos, images and articles. Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Log Files

I collect and use the data contained in web server log files.  The information in the log files includes your IP (internet protocol) address, your ISP (internet service provider), the browser you used to visit the site (such as Internet Explorer or Firefox), the time you visited the site and which pages you visited.
