Brown, Cameron or Clegg? – part 2

Other than the surge in support the Liberal Democrats received in the polls after the first leaders debate, one of the things that’s most striking about the general election this time around is the sheer creativity that’s been expressed in blogs, twitter and YouTube by “unofficial” sources. Not that long ago, probably the most creative campaigning you saw was John Cleese making party political broadcasts on behalf of the SDP-Liberal Alliance (we must have had longer attention spans in the 80′s – it’s 10 minutes long!) If you want to relive 1987, the video is below:

There are more questions than answers

This morning, I’ve had a quick look through the statistics that are provided by 123-reg, the company I’ve used to host my blog since October of last year. One of the reasons I moved from a free wordpress.com blog to a self-hosted wordpress.org environment was to be able to have a little more control over what I could do. One benefit of self hosting is the improved statistical information you can gather.

For example, I now know that I get more visits to the site from people using Internet Explorer than Firefox (3,642 vs 2,908 since last October), but that . . . → Read More: There are more questions than answers

DD303 – Week 2

Perception this week – and another five page set of notes for this topic. Something is already beginning to tell me that there will be a lot to revise and remember come exam time and so a strategic approach to choosing what to cover will be very necessary in a similar way to ED209.

Having said that, I thought the material was well presented (again.) I certainly enjoyed myself on a train the other morning (to the bemusement of those seated around me) playing around with Gibson’s theory of direct perception. It was probably at the point when I was . . . → Read More: DD303 – Week 2

How to avoid revising for ED209 #3

I’ve just had my lunch (if you’re interested to know what I’ve eaten, click here). While I was munching away, I saw an advertisement for a well known brand of margarine and a “heart age” calculator they’ve put onto the web. Ever keen to procrastinate just that little bit more, I thought I’d give it a go.

I’m disappointed. My heart is older than I am – but only just. Yes, Mr Flora, I know I need to lose a couple of pounds and take a bit more exercise … but I was hoping you were going to tell me . . . → Read More: How to avoid revising for ED209 #3

How to avoid revising for ED209 #2

I noticed there were lots of suggestions on how to go about this vital task on the ED209 Cafe forum last week. However, I’ve decided that my latest contribution will be a set of 12 questions that I’ve answered (having found them in the first place by surfing around the interweb, of course) which I’ve posted for the delectation and delight of other fellow ED209 procrastinators (along with my answers). So here goes:

1. What was the last furry thing you touched?

Toyah the guinea pig (who’s a bit poorly at the moment).

2. What is your current desktop picture?

I try not to make a habit of watching the shopping lifestyle channels on Freeview, but they can be surprisingly entertaining at times. I think it’s the combination of enthusiasm, desperation and mindless babbling that makes them so attractive (I get like that at work sometimes too, so I can sympathise with the presenters). That, plus the knowledge that being a good presenter in these circumstances is so, so difficult – just watch the clips of The Apprentice where novices try this out if you don’t believe me.

Anyway, my family and I love the demonstrations on Ideal World for . . . → Read More: How to avoid revising for ED209 #1

ED209 TMA06 – The science of procrastination

I think I’m managing to take procrastination to new heights on TMA06. I was away overnight on Tuesday, staying at the Elvetham Hotel (even better value than the Bracknell Central Travelodge provided that you are prepared to wait until a few days beforehand and gamble on availability through laterooms). I took my books, CD and the notes I’d made so far with the intention of breaking the back of the assignment. I wrote … zero words.

I got too distracted by being able to use the iPlayer at a sensible speed and instead watched a repeat of the 1993 European . . . → Read More: ED209 TMA06 – The science of procrastination
